Orji Uzor Kalu released from Kuje prison yesterday.
The former cover of Abia State and a senator of the federal republic of Nigeria Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu was yesterday released by Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Recall that in December 2019, the former governor was sentenced to 12 years in prison after he was convicted of N7.1bn fraud alongside his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited, and a former Director of Finance during his tenure, Ugo Udeogu.
However, on May 8th, 2020 the Supreme court nullified Kalu and Udeogo’s conviction on grounds that the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, lacked the jurisdiction to have presided over their case.
Meanwhile, after the case was nullified, he was still left in prison, Kalu later approached the Federal High Court and filed an appeal for his release. The appeal for release was delivered yesterday in his favor.
Mind you, #Kalu is not free yet. His offence is still waiting for him, however, he will be tried by a competent judge. he was released because the presiding judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, lacked the jurisdiction to have presided over their case.
