#Poem: Why I demand you Prove yourself by Eunice

I’ve had to watch my heart walk away More times than I care to say Leaving me here all alone To deal with the pain on my own

Each time it happened, I felt the ache A feeling I couldn’t seem to shake It seemed like my heart had a mind of its own Choosing to leave me, and walk alone

Now perhaps you can understand Why I am guarded, why I demand That those who enter my life Prove themselves worthy, before I open up inside

It’s not that I don’t want to trust But the thought of being hurt again is just Too much to bear, too much to take So I keep my heart safe, for my own sake

But sometimes I wonder, what if I’m wrong? What if there’s someone out there all along? Someone who will treat my heart with care And make me believe love is still fair

Until then, I’ll continue to be The guarded one, the one you see Because I’ve had to watch my heart walk away More times than I care to say.
