Labour Party Lawmaker Uche Ugwu Emerges Enugu State House of Assembly Speaker

In a surprising turn of events, Uche Ugwu, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) representing Udi North State Constituency, has been elected as the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly. This comes as the Labour Party, with its dominant presence in the assembly, chose to rally behind the PDP member.

Out of the 24 members of the House, the Labour Party holds 14 seats, while the PDP has 10. The Clerk of the House, Dr. Emma Udaya, smoothly guided the proceedings.

During the session, Iloabuchi Aniagu, representing Nkanu West State Constituency, nominated Uche Ugwu for the position of Speaker. The motion was supported by Chukwudi Nwankwo, the member-elect for Awgu South. With no other nominations presented, Uche Ugwu was duly declared the Speaker by the Clerk.

The announcement resonated through the assembly hall as Uche Ugwu, an experienced lawmaker and former Deputy Speaker, took up the mantle of leadership. The Clerk, Dr. Emma Udaya, officiating the declaration, officially confirmed Uche Calistus Ugwu as the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly.

The position of Deputy Speaker also witnessed a nomination, with Jane Eneh of Awgu North Constituency nominating Prince Ezenta Ezeani of Igboetiti West Constituency. The nomination gained support from Okey Mba, member-elect for Nkanu East. As no further nominations were put forth, Ezenta Ezeani was declared the Deputy Speaker by the Clerk.
