LASTMA Takes a Stand: Vows Prosecution for Unauthorized Use of Uniform in Films and Skits
In a bid to preserve the dignity and integrity of its institution, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has declared its intention to prosecute skit makers and filmmakers caught using the agency’s uniform, color, kits, or accouterments without proper authorization from the government.
The stern warning was issued by Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, who expressed his dissatisfaction with the “demeaning manner in which movie and skit makers portray the LASTMA institution in their movies and skits.” The use of LASTMA uniforms without following the legal procedures outlined in Section 79 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 is considered a criminal offense.
This announcement came after the General Manager viewed a viral video on social media featuring two actors wearing fake LASTMA uniforms. The video depicted one of them being revived through diabolical means after impounding a vehicle.
Mr. Bakare-Oki emphasized the need for film and skit makers to obtain the necessary permits before portraying LASTMA officers in their productions. He warned that those who fail to comply will face the full consequences of the law.
Addressing the issue of unauthorized possession and usage of LASTMA uniforms in society, Mr. Bakare-Oki highlighted the importance of regulating such portrayals in movie production. The move aims to curb the proliferation of LASTMA kits and uniforms within the community.
The General Manager urged organizations like the National Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTA) to caution their members, emphasizing that anyone caught using LASTMA uniforms without an approved permit would be prosecuted in accordance with Section 79 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. The statement, signed by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at LASTMA, serves as a clear warning to those involved in unauthorized depictions of the agency in films and skits.
