Adamawa State Reports Measles Outbreak: 42 Fatalities, Closure of All Primary and Secondary Schools

In recent developments, Adamawa State in northeast Nigeria has been hit by a devastating measles outbreak, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 42 young lives. The state government took swift action on April 28, 2024, closing down all primary and secondary schools in response to the crisis.

The outbreak primarily affected the Mubi North and Gombi local government areas of the state. Commissioner Felix Tangwami of Health and Human Services confirmed the severity of the situation, noting that 42 fatalities had been recorded among the affected children.

Expressing concern, Tangwami highlighted that apart from Lamurde, all 21 local government areas were on high alert due to the outbreak. He specified that the affected wards numbered eight in Mubi and seven in Gombi.

Dr. Umar Garba Pella, Commissioner of Education and Human Capital Development, affirmed the decision to close schools. He emphasized that the closure applied to both public and private institutions at the primary and secondary levels, effective immediately. Pella stated that this measure would be in place for one week while authorities closely monitor the situation.
